Panoramicl X-rays

digital X-rays

Thomas Duffy, DDS, and our caring team at Peninsula Family Dentistry believe modern technology can make dentistry more accurate and easier for our patients when leveraged appropriately. While panoramic X-ray, or “Panorex” technology has been around for decades, modern advancements have made our modern version a valuable staple in dental diagnostics. Panoramic X-ray lets us capture your entire mouth (upper or lower teeth, jaw, sinuses, jaw joints, and surrounding hard tissues) in one detailed image. This wide view helps us plan treatments, as well as catch problems early. This imaging tool combines comfort, speed, and accuracy with low radiation and is often used in conjunction with other tools to enhance the quality of your dental care.

Get the Big Picture With a Panoramic X-ray

Dr. Duffy uses our panoramic X-ray to image a single picture of your teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures in an instant. Instead of taking many (up to 21!) small, inside-the-mouth pictures, the machine rotates around your head from the outside to capture a complete view. This scan is often used alongside of our intraoral X-rays, most often associated with your hygiene appointments.  This scan shows details that regular X-rays might miss, like impacted teeth or sinus involvement. Dr. Duffy and our team often use the additional information to guide your care and any necessary treatment plan.

Why Panoramic X-ray Matters for You

This sweeping, wide-angle image helps us to fully see every tooth  and its roots, as well as your jawbones, jaw joints, and sinuses. A panoramic X-ray can check wisdom teeth, monitor jaw growth (it’s amazing how often a grown-up tooth will be missing in kiddos), and spot hidden infections, cysts, and/or tumors (which don’t always don’t hurt and could go undetected). The process is faster since the entire mouth is captured in one scan instead of up to 21 intra-oral X-rays, but with a radiation exposure approximately equivalent to only two to four intra-oral X-rays. From that perspective, it is more accurate taking a smaller number of supplemental images in areas that may need more detail. As a single image, it’s also easier for us to use to explain treatment in a way you can see and understand.

Catching Wisdom Teeth Before They Act Up

Dr. Duffy may use panoramic X-rays to evaluate wisdom teeth before they cause pain or crowding. The scan shows whether your child’s teeth are impacted, angled incorrectly, or too close to nerves. With this information, we can plan ahead for extractions or other treatments safely and comfortably. Families with teens especially value how early detection prevents future problems. While the 3D cone beam CBCT scan can pinpoint the final planning details if the tooth roots seem close to a nerve, in most cases, the panoramic is sufficient.

While the CBCT scan is essential for accurate mapping of the bone and surrounding structures for implant planning, the panoramic serves as a very low-dose overview X-ray to be able to consider what treatment may or may not be possible, and more accurately choose which other planning tools (which of themselves may involve higher radiation or cost if used in all cases) to implement for final planning.

Detecting Hidden Issues

A panoramic X-ray reveals more than just teeth, picking up cysts, jaw disorders, sinus problems, and tumors. These discoveries allow us to address concerns early or refer patients to specialists when necessary, as sometimes sinus issues can cause dental symptoms, but also the other way around. Patients feel reassured knowing we can spot issues that may not appear in routine exams, or even have any symptoms at all.

Fast, Safe, and Seriously Simple

A panoramic scan takes less than a minute while you stand still and let the machine rotate gently around your head. We review your images right away, so your appointment moves quickly without delays. Families love the smooth process because it feels easy, comfortable, and stress-free. At the same time, we keep your safety a top priority by using the lowest radiation possible. Panoramic X-rays provide more information with less exposure than traditional film methods.

Who Benefits Most From Panoramic Imaging?

While everyone gains something from panoramic scans, they play an especially important role for:

  • Children and teens with developing jaws and teeth, as wisdom teeth grow, or some adult teeth may never have formed, and preserving the baby tooth becomes more critical.
  • Adults preparing for dental implants or dentures.
  • Patients with wisdom teeth or orthodontic needs.
  • Families with a history of jaw or sinus issues.

A Trustworthy Tool for Better Care

At Peninsula Family Dentistry, Dr. Duffy offers a variety of tools to provide the appropriate diagnostic exam(s) for each patient. Families trust us because we take the time to understand, then explain each person’s  dental issues thoroughly, as well as answer your questions.  Additionally, we do not order exams or treatments that we believe you do not need. Like our other diagnostic exams, Dr. Duffy will explain your panoramic image in detail and discuss any areas of concern with you. His interactive approach helps you feel more involved and knowledgeable. We believe and value that transparency builds confidence with every visit.
